Texas Reds Festival

Hi All!

I recently participated in the Texas Reds Festival in downtown Bryan, Texas. The festival was a two day event held in numerous locations throughout Historic Downtown Bryan and was spearheaded by the City of Bryan and Messina Hof Winery. I was one of the featured artists in a showcase sponsored by the Arts Council of Brazos Valley and our space was festooned with vintage chandeliers and an interesting array of vendors including a live pottery demonstration. My guests received free cinnamon chili chocolate hand painted lips. It was loads of fun!

Most of you know I have been taking Belly Dancing Classes this summer and have really enjoyed the beauty and art form of the dance. Recently I had the pleasure of taking a class with Lazetta Church which was kindly organized by Joyce Stephen from Keller Williams. Lazetta has danced for international festivals, restaurants, parties, cultural events and community fundraisers. She has been performing this dance style since the early 1980's and has taught the program to students from all over the world. When you hear the words “sexy man,” what thoughts do they conjure up? Just what is it that gives a man sex appeal? Many times sex appeal is defined in terms of the physical body. “Players” with an unparalleled charm…tall, handsome hunks with deep penetrating eyes that mentally undress us sending chills down our spine. With their hard, buff bodies and edgy personality players have, in the past, successfully seduced the knickers off us. OK, I admit that I am guilty of being beguiled by their charms. But I am now determined, with your help, to give the term sexy man a new definition. By getting rid of preconceived societal notions of what makes a man sexy, we could completely create a new paradigm of the sexy man as one who embodies balance in his life; someone who cherishes their relationship and nurtures it instead of sport dating and one night stands.

Over the past month I have interviewed women in their 20’s through their late 60’s. I invited them to share with me their thoughts and views on what a sexy man looked like to them. Here are some of the results of the survey:

One attribute of the sexy man that came resounding through is that he is not afraid of commitment….think of President Barack Obama, Sting, Pierce Brosnan, Hugh Jackman, and Jon Hamm. Not only do they not shy away from long-term commitment but they publicly embrace it. For a while, commitment and marriage were not in the sexy man’s vocabulary. Somewhere along the way, commitment and masculinity were deemed mutually exclusive. Enter Bradley Boyd... who, after hearing of his friends unsuccessful attempts at finding long-term relationships, created the new website SetforMarriage.com. Bradley wanted to dedicate the site to those who were tired of the sport dating of some of the other popular dating sites. The site is devoted exclusively to those who want to find the perfect mate who also has the desire to be in a committed relationship with the goal of marriage. And so it appears that the delicate balance of being sexy and embracing commitment has occurred. This has opened the door for all kinds of wonderful attributes to be accepted and recognized as sexy. See guys…you can relax now. The pressure is off. You can be sexy even if you don’t have six-pack abs. If you are intelligent, in touch with your authentic self, and embracing your life’s mission—it doesn’t get sexier than that!

Yesterday Yvette Lopez and I hosted a wonderful event called "Goddess Day at the Chateau"©. I have been doing Goddess Events since 2005 as a way to celebrate the talents of women, provide a launch pad for new businesses and provide a nurturing environment for women to connect and meet each other.

Yesterday's event was done with a Parisienne Theme with gorgeous hors d'oeuvres and decorations by Yvette Lopez, French Chateau Champagne punch, a Chocolate Bar, Elegant Floral Arrangement by Lauren Shipp owner of Cedar Park Florist and the most fabulous collection of women vendors and services. Our mix included jewelry and chocolate truffles by moi, Kathleen Grandfield, my new line of candles by Lux Fragrances, spa beauty products and Italian beads by Mini Moons-Ruth, Gifts from Things She Adores by Courtney Enriquez, Loretta's Accessories by Loretta Starck, Paintings by CourtneyArte.com, Tarot Card Readings and Numerology by Ileana Hinojosa, Therapeutic Chair Massage by Hillary Bergman, and Intuitive Readings by Medium Christina Carlin. Not only did we feel luxurious, indulged, and pampered but our souls were nurtured at the same time. We made new friends and connections with women entrepreneurs and just felt a blanket of empowerment over us. Yvette made a beautiful Affirmation Tree and everyone could take home a Positive Affirmation to ponder. It was a perfect day with the Girls!

"Celebrity Goddess" Nicole Graham

How did you come up with the concept for the Modern Goddess?

The concept for the Modern Goddess evolved over time and based on the changes in my life.

I have worked in the training and personal development field for the past 15 years, mostly in the corporate environment. During that time I specialised in cultural change and re-establishing disjointed training and development teams, mostly consisting of women, who thought they had to do it all on their own.

When I moved to Hong Kong from Australia, I realised that not only did women, in general, feel like they had to do it on their own, but over time they lost themselves in their careers, their families or in my particular situation, trying to live in another country. At some point they start to question what they were doing with their life – I know I certainly did.

The Modern Goddess concept is about reconnecting with and rediscovering your inner goddess; your personal power, and as a woman, you get to define that for yourself because we’re all different. For some it might be confidence, others it might be the strength to say no or to say yes. The aim is to have you standing tall, proud and in your own personal power.

I’m currently offering Soul Coaching and Small Business Coaching online, however do plan to expand my services in the new year.

There is so much unrest in the world today and many people get caught up in the negativity of it all. Even though for most, trying to solve the world’s problems is overwhelming and impossible, but we don’t have to save the world, instead we need to make positive, constructive and heart-felt changes to our immediate world. Over time, those changes will positively influence another to make a positive change in their life, and then we start to see the domino effect. Women have so much influence, however they do not see this… and it is now time to take a stand.

As Mahatma Gandhi says “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Having a work/life balance is so important to all of us busy Goddesses...what are some tips you can share with us on how to unwind?

Living in busy Hong Kong can be exhausting so when I get home from being out and about seeing clients, I unwind by putting on some soothing music, having a shower and washing away the energy of the day. I then slip into my lounge wear – mostly cute and comfortable pj’s and put on some candles or incense or burn one of my Goddess-ence oils. There are many child friendly candles and oil burners around these days so people with children can still enjoy such simple pleasures.

I also love taking the time, at least once a month, to spoil myself… this could be a home manicure, a bubble bath, a foot soak or just a nana nap on our lounge and all these are inexpensive but effective. While in the bath or having my foot soak, I use the time to read a book or a magazine. This treatment is great for the end of the week and can be viewed as your own reward for working hard from Monday to Friday.

Another thing I enjoy is creative visualisation. I take myself off to a tropical island and feel the sand under my feet and the sun on my skin. I do this often when on the bus coming home. This day-dream allows you to escape from the stress of your life. You don’t have to go to a tropical island, you could visualise the tension in your body melting away or sending your mind chatter off in a balloon, never to be seen or heard again.

Taking the time to unwind allows you to leave your day behind and enjoy the evening activities.

My friend Yvette took me into Carolyn Westbrook's charming mini bungalow in Warrenton. She found one of Carolyn's lovely
signature linen pillows for her bed. Everywhere I looked there were gorgeous vignettes and beautiful home accessories.

I photographed this wonderful scene with the bold black and white fabric backdrop outdoors at Carolyn's Booth. It transported me to Europe! C'est Magnifique!

Carolyn even stopped long enough for a nice chat with us and a wonderful photo. You can find her book "Carolyn Westbrook Home" on Amazon and at the major bookstores.

Recently, through this very blog, I have had the pleasure of meeting Heidi Richards, founder of WECAI.org and the new site wherewomenprosper.com. She is a dynamic woman and her sites are powerful resources of information. She is truly an inspiration to all of us businesswomen!

What prompted you to conceive your idea for the Women's eCommerce Association?

I was attending an event for Women and Minority Owned Businesses and the speaker talked about starting an organization for African Americans in eCommerce—I was with a couple of friends and we looked at each other and said at almost the same time, “Hey, why not one for WOMEN!” That was in 2001. It took 2 years to launch the organization and now the Women's eCommerce Association, Int'l will be celebrating our 5-year Anniversary to coincide with Women's eCommerce Days (which we created in 2004). We will be hosting a huge online event called How to Grow a Million Dollar Business. You can read more about it at wherewomenprosper.com.

What were your biggest challenges in starting your organization?

Learning technology—basic things like the best way to send emails, how to design html newsletters, and what tools we should be using and recommending to our members. We also made a few mistakes such as designing our own shopping cart system. We found ourselves stuck when we lost our technician and had to hire someone to make repairs to the site. We would have been better off finding shopping cart software that offered support.

What are some lessons you have learned so far?

Hire people smarter than you. I did that when I hired one of my daughters to help me with the website and then later she became a partner. I hired a blog designer to help me with my first blog and she has helped me get 5 up and running! We have hired a consultant to help with the basic layout of our new magazine, a virtual assistant to help with administrative things—details I don't really like to tackle and so on...
Don't be afraid to ask for help. About 2 years ago I realized I could not do it all alone and have since enlisted paid professionals and volunteers to help with a variety of initiatives we have in place and those we are in the process of creating.
Don't be afraid to try new things, even if they're not so new. Blogging is a good example. I resisted blogging for a long time and then in 2007 decided to start a blog to see what “all the fuss was about” and because I needed to educate myself so I knew what my members were talking about. And besides I loved reading blogs. Well long story short, I now have seven blogs and am converting two of my regular websites over to blogs as well. As you may have guessed by now, I tend to go to extremes.

What are the valuable tools WECAI.org offers to women in business?

We offer a variety of resources to help women become even better at what they do. Via our blogs, e-magazine, special reports, ebooks and audio tapes.
We have regular networking and educational resources including two major events a year—Virtual Woman's Day, and our annual Summit (which each year focuses on a different topic). And we just launched our newest initiative, WeCademy e-Learning Center. Our programs are designed by experienced coaches, trainers and facilitators in many disciplines; for entrepreneurs and professionals who want to take advantage of unlimited global business opportunities offered by internet technologies. What is the most rewarding thing about what you do?

La Vida Recipe “Baby Artichokes”

My daughter Courtney has just moved to Austin and this summer we have been experimenting with some new recipes. She is a vegetarian and we have been on the lookout for something different. We were delighted to find this wonderful recipe in the Magazine Intermezzo. I love this publication! How can you not like a magazine with the tagline “Fine Interludes in Food, Wine, Home & Travel”! I thought this was worth sharing since it is a great appetizer for your summer dinner parties, which can be eaten plain or dipped in some yummy sauce. They are great served hot and crunchy out of the pan or at room temperature.

Baby Artichokes

For Artichokes
1 lemon, halved
6 Baby Artichokes
1/2 cup flour
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
Coarse Salt ( I use Pink Himalayan Salt)

For Breadcrumb Mixture
1 cup Fresh breadcrumbs
1/4 cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt ( I use Pink Himalayan Salt)
1 Tablespoon minced fresh parsley

Heat a large saucepan of water to a slow simmer. Add juice of half lemon to water.

Fill a large bowl with cold water. Add juice of remaining half lemon and drop both squeezed lemon halves into water. Set aside.

Prepare artichokes. Peel stem of each artichoke. Remove tough green leaves until you reach leaves that are partially pale yellow. Cut artichokes into quarters. Immediately place cut artichokes in bowl of cold lemon water ( to avoid oxidation and discoloring). Do not discard cold lemon water.

When all artichokes are peeled and cleaned gently drop into boiling lemon water to blanch for one minute. Use a slotted spoon to remove. Place blanched artichokes back into bowl with cold lemon water.

Prepare breading ingredients. Combine breadcrumb ingredients. Place flour into a shallow dish. Place eggs into a second shallow dish. Place breadcrumbs into a third shallow dish.

Heat olive oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet on medium heat.

One at a time, removed artichoke quarters from lemon water; dry on paper towels. Dredge in flour, then dip in egg, then roll in breadcrumbs and place in skillet. Repeat with all artichoke pieces.

Use tongs to carefully turn artichoke quarters to brown on all sides, cooking each side for about 2 minutes or until golden brown and crunchy. Place cooked artichokes on a paper towel-lined plate to drain for 1 minute. Transfer to platter for serving.

Recently, I had the pleasure of getting to know Jennifer Moore, creator of Pink Heels. Jennifer is a dynamic woman who is impacting the lives of others and having fun doing it. What a great way to share her talents!

Tell our readers what prompted you to start Pink Heels.
I started Pink Heels as a result of being burned out from the corporate world. I was working 60+ hours a week without any opportunity to take vacation time to recharge my batteries. I didn't even have time to spend time with friends or family. My entire life revolved around work. I was in desperate need of finding balance in my life. One day I decided to quit my hectic career and do absolutely nothing for several months.
As I was in the midst of my sabbatical, I was exploring my next steps. After considering my skills, talents, education, and what I enjoy doing, I came up with the beginnings of Pink Heels. Initially it was only a career coaching and business consulting business but the yoga studio and boutique was added later.

What were the biggest challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge of starting Pink Heels is dealing with the initial unknown. Do I have the right marketing strategy? Have I hired the right people? Do I have all of the right pieces in place to be successful?

What are some lessons you learned so far?
Patience and perseverance are essential to build a successful business. You have to keep on moving forward during the challenging moments and be willing to ride out long periods of downtime. There are no guarantees but if you believe in your service and product, everything will work out.

What suggestions do you have for those women who are looking for a life and career change?
Understand your limitations. Can you survive without a steady income? Can you forego vacations? Are you willing to work 24/7? Do you have the skills necessary to be successful? Do you need a career/business coach/consultant? Be realistic about what you can and cannot do before proceeding.

What is the most rewarding thing about what you do?
The positive comments, hugs, and little gifts that I receive from the women who benefit from the various components of Pink Heels is priceless. It is incredibly rewarding knowing that I am impacting the lives of women for the better. It is the best non-job EVER!

Diana Kennedy the “Grande Dame” of Mexican Cuisine

Many moons ago my Grandmother Rosa introduced me to one of her treasured cookbooks by Diana Kennedy entitled The Cuisines of Mexico which was published in 1972 with a foreword by Craig Claiborne, Food Editor of the New York Times. My Grandmother loved experimenting in the kitchen and I was always in awe of her culinary creations so if she was interested in Diana Kennedy so was I. Diana's diligence in tracking down traditional recipes from the farthest reaches of Mexico was fascinating to me. This adventurous Englishwoman spent a number of years in Mexico after her marriage to Paul Kennedy who was the New York Times Correspondent there.

Last year I found out that Diana was going to be doing a cooking class in San Miguel de Allende. I really wanted to go however as most of you know my Mom was ill with cancer and I was hesitant to leave the country. So it was to my surprise that I happened to walk into one of my local bookstores recently, only to see that Diana had a new book she was promoting called The Art of Mexican Cooking and she would actually be here in Austin. Mon Dieu! I was as excited to see her as I was when I happened to cross paths with the Queen Mum, Princess Diana and JFK Jr.!

I grabbed my Grandmother Rosa's cookbooks and purchased a copy of Diana's new book and, like an anxious kid, I camped out in the book store awaiting the “High Priestess” of Mexican Cuisine. Of course I was the first in the queue. I introduced myself and had a lovely chat with Diana. She signed all three books and invited me to come to her next class.

On behalf of my Grandmother Rosa and my Mother Mary Alice I stood there and felt privileged to finally meet the Woman who was awarded “The Order of the Aztec Eagle”!

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Chris Brown, founder of Marketing Resources & Results. She offers us some wonderful words of wisdom! Her company offers a wide range of services and various programs that include Strategic Market Planning, PR, graphic design and websites.

Why did you start your blog?
I started my blogging about 2 years ago after reading other blogs. I found that although I had comments to add to other blogs, they were getting too long and off track... I had more to say. Blogging about branding and marketing is fun for me because I really love the subject. Unlike simply writing articles, writing a blog starts a conversation, where articles are very one way, one voice. The blog is more interactive. I find the more I share, the more I learn from others.

Can you share with us the challenges that you have encountered related to starting your marketing business?
Probably the biggest challenge I had was to work through self doubt about running a business. I wasn't concerned about doing the marketing for the clients, or even marketing my business. I was concerned about how do you do all the rest of the stuff—you know, being the CEO of a business is different than being the VP of marketing.
I had to learn accounting so I could invoice and also keep track of the bills. Figuring out the entire sales process of how to go from the initial handshake and exchange of cards to getting their signature on the bottom of the contract was new for me. And technology challenges! I continue to learn every day!!
Ways I overcame the challenges? I work with a business coach and joined the Boardroom Group that is a board of advisors—other women business owners who share their challenges and successes. We meet twice a month. I read blogs for business owners. Also I learn a lot by reading books like The E-Myth and Free Agent Nation. This month Marketing Resource & Results celebrates 10 years in the business and I still learn something new every day!!

What do you think of Chocolate as a branding and marketing opportunity?
I think chocolate has so many of the positive attributes that marketers try to associate with their brand. Rich, creamy, smooth, sweet, thick, a luxury, a treat, an indulgence, pleasurable, rewarding, and more. I think chocolate as a branding opportunity makes a really great match for brands that market to women. Although men love chocolate, women LOVE chocolate. From a practical standpoint, chocolate is very moldable so that imprinting a message, logo or icon is not difficult. And lets face it, would you rather get another pen or mug... or enjoy chocolate!!

Parting thoughts and words of advice?
For branding: consistency. For marketing: just keep doing it. For starting a business: read and network. For blogging: start by commenting. And for chocolate: please pass it over here!!

Many of you remember me having regular events at my studio called “A Day with The Goddesses”™. For those of you that did not attend it was a day where we celebrated the talents of women in the Austin Community. The day was a wonderful way to connect with women who you might not encounter otherwise and learn about what they do as well as be pampered in a fun, relaxed environment. Chocolate Makes You Feel Good!

Chocolate has long been known to trigger surges in serotonin, which is a chemical that wards off anxiety and elevates your mood. Research is now revealing that the dark high cacao percentage can also give you a surge in energy. In a study at Hull York Medical School in the UK, a 1.6 oz. daily serving helped alleviate symptoms of chronic fatigue by 30 percent over the course of 8 weeks. Stephen Atkin, Ph.D., study author, credits the polyphenols in chocolate-the same substances that lower blood pressure, as proven by a separate study at the Univesrsity Hospital of Cologne in Germany. In order to get the biggest polyphenol dose, Atkin recommends selecting products containing at least 70 percent cacao.

Aztec Emperor Montezuma is quoted as having said of xocoatl(a bitter cacao-bean drink): “The divine drink, which builds up resistance and fights fatigue. A cup of this drink permits a man to walk a whole day without food.” It is recorded that Montezuma drank fifty goblets of xocoatl each day.

Most of you know I have moved Red Texture and Chocolatecture to the Houston Metroplex. I have been busy over the last several months developing Chocolatecture and have also been working with my Web designer Holly Chervnsik to incorporate both businesses into one new website. Several of you have seen some of my corporate work in chocolate. I have had the pleasure of working with some wonderful businesses that have selected me to be their chocolatier and promote their business with custom and novelty chocolates.
